Description

The painting was exhibited at the 1846 Salon with an excerpt from Thiers's Histoire de la Révolution française:

It was at La Force that the unfortunate Princesse de Lamballe, who had been famous at court for her beauty and her liaisons with the queen, was staying. Dying, she was led to the terrible guichet. "Who are you?" the scarf-wearing executioners ask her. "Louise de Savoie, Princesse de Lamballe. "What was your role at court? Do you know of any plots in the château?" "I knew of no plots." "Take an oath to love liberty and equality, take an oath to hate the king, the queen and royalty." "I'll take the first oath; I can't take the second, it's not in my heart." "So swear," said one of the assistants who wanted to save her. But the unfortunate woman could neither see nor hear. "Let Madame be enlarged," said the head of the ticket office. Here, as at the Abbey, a word had been devised to serve as a death signal.
