Description
Pauliska has managed to escape from a sect of atheist magnetizers who have been arrested and locked up in Castel Sant'Angelo, awaiting trial. Pauliska, Edvinski, and the sister of one of the magnetizers, Zepherina, were also locked up while the trial was completed, despite their innocence. During the trial, the magnetizers were all convicted, but one of them caused an explosion in the castle. When Pauliska opens her eyes again, she is alone and searches for her son, whom she finds in the arms of Zéphérina, who sacrificed herself to protect him from the flames. The latter had developed an ambiguous tenderness towards the little boy and dies happy to die for him.
