Baron d'Olnitz bites Pauliska (Pauliska, vol.1, Lemierre, An VI) - Challiou
Notice n°1 sur 2 Notice suivante
Description
Pauliska has fled her native Poland, invaded by the Russians. She heads for Hungary, where she decides to stay in the hotel of the mysterious Baron d'Olnitz in the town of Ust. After Pauliska's lover, Ernest, has to rejoin his regiment, Olnitz takes advantage of the situation: he locks Pauliska up in his house, takes away her child and reveals his nature. In reality, he is a "frightful maniac, atheist, profound chemist, delirious naturalist who experiments on unfortunate women" (Révéroni Saint-Cyr, Pauliska ou La Perversité moderne t. I, Paris, Lemierre, An VI, p. 66). He wishes to establish a love bond with Pauliska in a chemical and physical way, which sounds like blasphemy: so he begins by biting her forearm, which identifies her with a vampiric figure.
1. Signed below the engraving on the left "Challiou del."
Legend in the cartouche: "Love is a rage; it can be inoculated by the bite."
3. The theme of the inoculation of love is an echo of a scene from La Nouvelle Héloïse.
