Description

Delphina's lover, Dom Manuel de Roxante, has been announced dead following a nighttime duel with his rival Duke Ferdinand de Zarbès, governor of San-Domingo. The news is repeated by numerous characters, leaving Delphina in despair, but the reader soon learns that the announcement is false: Dom Juan del Ingano, a friend of the hero, takes Manuel into his home in the greatest secrecy to hide him. This friend's house has the peculiarity of giving access to an underground mine which is connected to Delphina's family home. Juan suggests that Dom Manuel use this mine to visit Delphina, without anyone seeing him. In the image, Dom Manuel has just crossed the mine and Delphina, who thinks he's still dead, believes she's seeing a ghost.
