Description
Matilde tells her story: having refused to follow her father's orders and forsake her lover, she is forced to take the veil and disinherited in favor of Marchmont, her hypocritical and avaricious cousin. She then finds herself harassed by the convent's superior, Thérèse, who is also Marchmont's secret lover. After her father's death, Matilde sinks into madness, then decides to escape. She takes advantage of one night to go out, but just as she sees the convent door strangely open, she hears voices and comes upon Marchmont and Thérèse kissing.
