Madame de Montfort and her son are rescued by a shepherd (Nelson, vol.2-2, Lepetit, An VI) - Mariage after Challiou
Notice précédente Notice n°3 sur 4 Notice suivante
Description
Madame de Montfort tells her story: after being abused and then abandoned on the eve of her wedding by her fiancé, she is driven out of the family home by her father when he realizes she is pregnant. What follows is a series of misfortunes that befall the poor woman and her child, who are subjected to all kinds of persecution. She decides to end her life far from the cities when a shepherd, accompanied by his dog and his favorite sheep, discovers her and comes to her aid. This is typically the description of a locus amoenus, an idyllic country setting that stands on its own, a kind of pause in the narrative after the series of unfortunate events that have befallen Madame de Montfort.
1. Signed lower left, "Challiou", lower right "Mariage"
Legend: "While he revived my spirits, the gentle ewe of end at my son's side, lavished help upon him:"
3. The image perhaps hijacks the theme of the Virgin and Child in an idyllic country setting.
