Recherche infructueuse

Blessing makes an exchange with a young girl (Nelson, vol.2-1, Lepetit, An VI) - Mariage after Challiou

Description

The eldest daughter of a destitute family recounts what happened to her: having given alms in vain, she was about to go home when a man accosted her. He handed her a piece of paper supposed to make her fortune, in exchange for the three sols her mother had given her. Just as the girl thinks she's been robbed, it turns out that the paper in question is a winning lottery ticket, which is a great relief to the family. The man in question is actually Blessing, a man who comes to the rescue of unfortunate families. However, the illustrated moment doesn't make the character's beneficence obvious, and even remains rather ambiguous: as the caption mentions only money, the reader may believe that this is extortion, all the more so as the exchange takes place in a dark alleyway that the two women visible in the distance are trying to avoid.
