Description
The engraving illustrates the story of Miss Landon. She was in love with a soldier, Ross, who was leaving for America. Without warning, she followed him, disguised as a man, to a battlefield, where she found him out of the way, shot with a poisoned arrow. To save him, she sucked out the venom, which herself condemned him to death.
History :
1. Signature lower left, "Cahlliou", and lower right, "Mariage".
Legend: "She sucked from the Wound the venom that would take her life;"
3. The illustration may evoke the Gothic theme of the vampire, or the theme of the inoculation of love staged by Rousseau in La Nouvelle Héloïse.
