Description

The illustrator has reproduced the last bas-relief described by Virgil:

Ducit Amazonidum lunatis agmina peltis
Penthesilea furens, mediisque in milibus ardet,
aurea subnectens exsertae cingula mammae,
bellatrix, audetque uiris concurrere uirgo. (1, 490-493)

(The battalions of the Amazones, with their moon-shaped shield, have at their head the fiery Penthesileus, among her thousand companions; full of ardor, she wears fixed beneath her naked breast a golden harness, the warrior, the virgin who dares to measure herself against men.)
