Description
Cleveland begins his tale by recounting how his mother raised him away from the cities.
Rejected by both Charles I and Cromwell, with whom she had had Cleveland, she preferred to withdraw from worldly life to teach her son Belles-Lettres. The young boy already enjoyed leafing through the books in his mother's library, and thus began to forge his own morals, from which he got his nickname of philosopher.
