Description
Cleveland meets the Viscount d'Axminster, who tells him the story of his life.
Victim one day of a plot by Cromwell, Axminster sets out to find his wife, dona Theresa, who has just been captured. In reality, it's an acolyte of the Lord Protector, the treacherous Aberdeen, who has kidnapped her to satisfy his desires. Axminster tracks him down and seizes her house by force.
In the image, Axminster's companions have just broken down the door to the dwelling, leaving her free to interrogate her rival. Visible in the background, they observe the scene depicted in the foreground: Axminster is seated, Aberdeen kneels before him and begs for mercy, while Axminster's wife is still in bed. Although she is perfectly innocent, Axminster, mad with rage, later stabs her through with several sword strokes.
