Gelin murders Bridge (Cleveland, Neaulme ed., 1732)

Description

Cleveland, after marrying Fanny and having three children with her, plans to return to England with his family and close friends, among them Bridge, his half-brother, and Gelin, a friend. But Gelin falls in love with Fanny and convinces her that Cleveland is cheating on her. Gullible and resigned, she agrees to run away with him, abandoning her husband and their children. Some time later, Cleveland's group reaches Europe, stopping off in La Coruña. One evening, while Bridge was strolling along the coast, he ran into Gelin, who was staying with Fanny in the same town. He then reproaches him for his dishonorable conduct: the two men draw swords, and Gelin deals Bridge a mortal blow.

On the engraving, Bridge is already lying on the ground while two of his companions rush over, swords in hand, to try and rescue him.
