Cleveland reunites with Axminster (Cleveland, Neaulme ed., 1732)
Notice précédente Notice n°5 sur 8 Notice suivante
Description
Cleveland has landed on the American continent in search of his tutor, Viscount d'Axminster, and his daughter Fanny, with whom he is in love. After many adventures, he finally manages to find them by crossing the Appalachian Mountains, only to discover them destitute, almost naked and bereft of resources.
In the image, Cleveland, dressed in European style, reaches out to Axminster, kneeling and unclothed. The servants accompanying Axminster surround them and participate in the outpouring of emotion. In the background, on the left, are presumably Fanny and Mme Riding, a woman accompanying Axminster and his daughter. Axminster, however, refuses to let Cleveland approach them before nightfall, for reasons of decency, since they are both also almost entirely naked.
