Clandestine marriages (Cleveland, Neaulme ed., 1732)

Description
Cleveland meets Bridge, who like himself is a natural son of Cromwell. The tragic fate they share brings them together, and Cleveland's brother tells him of his exile from England.
After many adventures, he is led by Protestants to St. Helena, where a community of Rochelois has founded a utopian colony. Bridge is not alone: five other men arrive at the same time. In reality, the colony is short of men, and recruits Protestants to join it across the seas.
On joining the community, the six newcomers are each obliged to marry a woman chosen by lot. But this obligation puts them off, and they form a secret plan to marry the women they love and who love them back. So the six couples meet clandestinely, at night, escaping the vigilance of the colony's leaders, and unite by each spending the night with their true chosen.
In the image, the six couples appear under the moonlight. One of the women holds a written contract or oath, which seems to formalize these forbidden marriages.
