Description

Albert and sire Bertrand, his friend, have come to the Mowbray mansion to demand justice: the current possessor of the family estate is held by a usurper, the youngest member of the Mowbray family. A dying man, he has in the past caused the death of his elder brother and his wife, having taken in their child Albert. But by forcing the usurper to relinquish his possessions, Albert and Sire Bertrand provoke the wrath of Reginald, his son, determined to remain the family's sole heir.

On the picture, it's he who threatens the old man on the left: it's Hubert, a servant who has revealed his masters' crimes. Reginald is held back by Albert and Sire Bertrand, while Reginald's father, in the background on the right, weak and racked with remorse, watches the scene impotently.
