Ambrosio signs the demonic pact (The Monk vol2, Delloye, 1840)

Description

Ambrosio has been locked up in the gaols of the Inquisition. He endures the questioning and, on the verge of release, finally gives in to the devil who tempts him. He signs the demonic pact without realizing that it means his eternal damnation.

History :

3. The appearance of the devil seems to echo the illustrations from previous editions. However, it is no longer this one that is considered here for its own sake: it is the act of the monk Ambrosio that is brought to the fore, to signify that it is indeed he who signs the pact willingly, once again giving in to his impulses.
