Ambrosio unveils Agnes (Le Moine t1, Delloye, 1840)

Description

Agnès, locked up against her will in a Madrid convent, plans to escape in order to join her lover Don Raymond. But she drops the letter detailing her escape plan and revealing her pregnancy in front of Ambrosio, whose prideful, inhuman morality drives him to hand her over to the convent's abbess, who subsequently tortures her.

History :

3. The image repeats the scene illustrated by the Favre edition, in 1797. This time the artist has pathetically depicted Agnès on the ground, as a symbol of her downfall: losing her only chance of escape, she no longer has any hope of getting out of the convent alive.
