Alfred shoots d'Ollifont (Moore, Grasville Abbey vol1, Maradan, 1798) - Bovinet after Challiou
Notice n°1 sur 3 Notice suivante
Description
At a masked ball, the perfidious Comte d'Ollifont attempts to kidnap Matilde Masérini to satisfy his desires. He thinks she's helpless because he's managed to get her brother, Alfred, out of the way. But Alfred, thanks to an anonymous friend, has been warned of the plot behind his back and manages to follow the trail of his sister and the Count, until the latter is about to get into a carriage. He then reveals himself and surprises the Count, who shoots him unsuccessfully the first time, before being shot.
This is what the image represents: Alfred overthrows the Count, supported by his servants who cry murder, even though he is the aggressor of Alfred and his sister. The action takes place at night, in front of the masked ball venue. The two men still hold their masks, which they have just removed to reveal themselves.
