Description
Alfred and Matilde, the last two descendants of the Masérini family, have fled their persecutors and taken refuge in Grasville Abbey, where their own father is said to have disappeared some twenty years earlier. They are accompanied by their servant, Léonard, and a peasant girl, Agnès. One night, while visiting a strange room, "the Corinthian capital of one of the columns collapsed with a frightful crash" (Moore, L'abbaye de Graville t. 2, Paris, Maradan, 1798, p. 228). A marble hand appears, holding a chain from which hangs a bloody key. Alfred grasps the key, but thunder resounds: at the same moment, a human presence rises before them and immediately disappears.
In the image, this ghost raises its arms on the left and frightens Leonardo and Agnes, in the middle, as well as Matilde and her brother, on the right, who holds the blood-covered key. In the background, a canvas is drawn up between the columns in the darkness: the broken column on the right, whose shaft has toppled to the ground, reveals the marble hand, which embodies the novel's strange manifestations.
.- Above the image: "Tom. 2e." on the left and "Pag. 229." on the right.
In the cartouche caption: "et elle disparut à travers le Plancher.".
Below the engraving: "Challiou inv.".
