The hermit tells his story (Moore, Grasville Abbey vol3, Maradan, 1798) - Bovinet after Challiou

Description

The Hermit of Grasville Abbey recounts the past crimes of the novel's antagonist, the Count of Ollifont.

The latter, having lost him to the world, blackmails him: either he agrees to become a hermit of Grasville Abbey, which the Count owns, or his daughter will be lost. To force him to accept, the Count arranges for the future hermit to meet him in an isolated, secret location, where he hopes his many fierce allies will impress him. The poor man accepts, yet is not intimidated: in the picture, he even holds a pistol, fearing betrayal, in front of the Count of Ollifont, recognizable by the white feather adorning his hat.
