Description
Bazile, a young peasant disguised as an aristocrat to replace the late son of the Marquise de Menneval, stays in Paris, where he follows the advice of the family's treacherous governor. He does his best to play the role imposed on him, but his mind remains focused on his mother, whom he has had to abandon. She sends him a letter expressing the pain of being separated from him. Moved, Bazile hesitates to leave everything behind and return to live with her, to put an end to this plan that is beyond him. Yet he pursues his role as marquis because he has fallen in love with a young damsel, and the hope of marriage with her holds him back.
