Bazile, cul-de-lampe (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol3) - De Launay after Eisen

Description

This allegorical cul-de-lampe depicts a celebration of virtue, to illustrate the short story Bazile. A young woman appears naked, bathed in light, and pushes aside a richly adorned figure bending before her. The latter carries a jewel-filled chest, a symbol of corrupting pomp, as well as a mask that reveals her duplicity.
