Lorenzo (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol3) - De Ghendt after Marillier

Description

Lorenzo, the illegitimate son of a princess, has grown up in seclusion, raised by a peasant named Sérano. When his mother dies, his uncle offers to officially recognize him and establish him as a legitimate heir, on an equal footing with his younger brother. But Lorenzo refuses, out of love for Nina, Sérano's daughter, with whom he wishes to share his life. Furious, his uncle chases him away from his brother. Lorenzo marries Nina, with whom he has two children a few years later. After the uncle's death, Lorenzo's brother, now free to make his own choices, decides to visit the family.

The engraving illustrates this moment: Lorenzo's brother, dressed elegantly, embraces Lorenzo and recognizes him as his equal. To the left, Nina offers flowers to her brother-in-law to thank him for his generosity, while Sérano, seated in the grass, is surrounded by his grandchildren.
