Rosalie, vignette (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol3) - Halbou after Marillier

Description

Rosalie, a young orphan raised by a bigoted aunt, has secretly given birth to the child of a man she didn't marry, and who has been exiled by his own family. Alone to raise her child, she hides him in an isolated room to protect him from her aunt's gaze. Overwhelmed by despair, Rosalie one day comes to contemplate killing him to spare him a life of misery and to save herself from dishonor.

The vignette depicts the moment when she hesitates to commit her crime, a gesture she will ultimately be unable to bring herself to perform.
