Rosalie (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol3) - Halbou after Marillier

Description

Rosalie, a young orphan raised by a bigoted aunt, fell in love with Montalmant, with whom she had a child, without being married to him. But Montalmant was exiled by his mother to force him into a more avatageable party. Left to her own devices, Rosalie gave birth in total secrecy. She is soon unmasked by her aunt, who disinherits her before she dies, and turns to the only compassionate person, Pastor Fréminville. Time passes, and as Résalie withers away in grief, Montalmant finally reappears: her mother has died, and he can now dispose of her hand.

The engraving depicts the moment when Montalmant approaches his alliterated lover and their child, under the pastor's tender gaze.
