Pauline and Suzette, vignette (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - De Launay after Marillier

Description

Suzette, a young peasant girl, has fallen in love with a village boy, Jacques, and their marriage seems imminent. But she suddenly learns that she is actually from an aristocratic Parisian family. In the blink of an eye, she is snatched from her circumstances and dressed in elegant clothes by two servants. As she contemplates herself in a mirror, Jacques comes to visit her; he then discovers a Suzette who has become distant and cold.

The vignette illustrates this reversal: Jacques, embarrassed, awkwardly holding his hat in his hands, stands before Suzette, who seems almost bothered by the presence of her former lover.
