Pauline and Suzette (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - De Launay after Marillier
Notice précédente Notice n°55 sur 63 Notice suivante
Description
Pauline de Monticourt and Suzette, two milk sisters with opposite statuses, have been raised together by Suzette's peasant mother Philippine. When Pauline is taken to Paris to reunite with her family, she suddenly adopts haughty manners and scornfully repels Suzette. Grief-stricken and bedridden, Philippine summons Pauline's family, a notary, a clergyman and several servants to reveal a secret. She confesses to having exchanged the two children, hoping to offer her own daughter a more enviable destiny; but seeing Suzette become proud, she couldn't help but restore the order of conditions.
In the image, Philippine lies in bed, surrounded by the ecclesiastic on her left and the tabellion on her right. At the foot of the bed stands Pauline, collapsed by the revelation of her origins and hiding her face. To the right, Suzette, now recognized as the true Demoiselle de Monticourt, stands with her hand raised. In the background, Monsieur de Monticourt questions Philippine, while the stunned assembly observes the scene.
