Recherche infructueuse

Germeuil, vignette (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - Le Grand after Marillier

Description

Madame de Cérignan, a clever schemer, has seduced a gullible married man in order to gradually ruin him. Pushing her manipulation even further, she seeks to convince Germeuil to marry her if his wife were to disappear. To achieve her ends, she feigns an excess of virtue, throws herself at his feet, and pretends to want to break up with him to preserve her reputation. Germeuil, deeply moved, falls into the trap and ends up promising her everything she wants.

The vignette illustrates the moment when Madame de Cérignan, kneeling before Germeuil, plays an apparent distress, while Germeuil, troubled, is about to give in to all her demands.
