- Signed at bottom left of engraving "G. Doré".
Legend: "QUE VOTRE GRANDEUR AILLE MAINTENANT DESCENDRE DE SON PALEFROI MADAME LA DUCHESSE. T. II, CHAP. XXXI." - Gustave Doré had originally planned to depict another moment in the chapter, a little later in the narrative: the duchess's damsels are busy grooming the ingenious hidalgo, and trimming his beard.
