Satan Discovers Earth (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

Towards the coast of Earth beneath,
Down from the ecliptic, sped with hoped success,
Throws his steep flight in many an aëry wheel. (Book III, 739-741)

Satan, in his quest for God's new Creation - Man - has just discovered Earth. This is guarded by Uriel, the regent angel of the Sun: by trickery, Satan manages to deceive him and approach the earthly paradise.
