Description

Now to the ascent of that steep savage hill
Satan hath journey'd on, pensive and slow. (Book IV, 172-173)

Satan has just landed on Earth and is now at the top of a cliff from which he can gaze out over the Garden of Eden. He is about to carry out his plan: to tempt Man and make him fall to take revenge on God.
