Michael and his angels, prevalent,
Encamping, placed in guard their watches round. (Book VI, 410-412)

The archangel Raphael tells Adam and Eve of the rebellion of Lucifer's army.

After the first day of battle between the rebellious angels and the angels loyal to God, the battlefield is littered with the bodies of the vanquished angels. Archangel Michael and his troops, resplendent in brilliant light, guard the battlefield through the night, before hostilities are resumed.
