The Serpent Draws near (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

Nearer he drew, and many a walk traversed
Of stateliest covert, cedar, pine, or palm. (Book IX, 434-435)

While Adam and Eve discuss the threat to them, Satan has taken possession of the serpent and inevitably approaches the couple, still unconcerned about their nakedness in the face of divine light. Eve, persuading her husband to separate for work, naively insists that she feels ready to face temptation, while Adam prefers that they stay together, rightly convinced that their union would make them stronger in the face of the devil crawling in the shadows.
