The Fall of Adam and Eve (Milton's Paradise Lost) - Gustave Doré

Description

Nor only tears
Rained at their eyes, but high winds worse within
Began to rise. (Book IX, 1121-1123)

After giving in to their lustful love, the fruit of original sin, Adam and Eve awake to discover the nakedness of their bodies, a sign of the loss of their innocence. Aware of right and wrong, they sink into the thickest wood and cover themselves with fig leaves in an attempt to conceal their actions by veiling their now indecent bodies. Then, overwhelmed, they give free rein to their tears as they realize their downfall.
