Adam and Eve hide from God (Milton's Paradise Lost) - Gustave Doré

Description

They heard,
And from His presence hid themselves among
The thickest trees. (Book X, 99-101)

God the Father orders Jesus to go to the Garden of Eden to announce to Adam and Eve their fall and expel them from the earthly paradise. Sensing His presence, illuminating the garden, Adam and Eve hide among the thickest trees and seek to conceal their nakedness, now a source of shame as it reveals their sin.
