With complicated monsters, head and tail. (Book X, 521-523)
After causing the fall of Adam and Eve, Satan returns to his people to cheers. No sooner does he have time to harangue his troops to announce his victory, than hisses rise up from the assembly: all the fallen angels, and Satan himself, are metamorphosed into the animal that was the instrument of temptation - the serpent.
