The Flood (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

All dwellings else
Flood overwhelmed, and they, with all their pomp,
Deep under water rolled. (Book XI, 747-749)

Before driving Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, Michael opens up a vision of the future to Adam.

He reveals how God will unleash the Flood and swallow beneath the waves the vain greatness that the hand of Man has proudly raised up. As a sumptuous temple here is gradually submerged by the waters, the flash of divine power rumbles across the sky.
