Moses and the Tables of the Law (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

They beseech
That Moses might report to them his will
And terror cease. (Book XII, 236-238)

Before driving Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, Michael opens up to Adam a vision of the future.

He reveals to him how the people of Israel will escape from Egypt and have Moses as their mediator. He will climb to the summit of Mount Sinai to receive, from God's own hand, the laws intended to guide his people.
