Adam and Eve Cast out from Paradise (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

Some natural tears they dropt, but wiped them soon. (Book XII, 645)

After revealing to Adam in vision the future of his descendants, Michael leads him out of the earthly paradise in the company of Eve. The entrance to Eden is then closed: fearsome figures and fiery weapons stand in the way. Adam and Eve find themselves on an arid path, symbolizing a new, inhospitable land that they will now have to work by the sweat of their brow to ensure their survival.
