Subject. Edmond, condemned to stand at the foot of the scaffold where Gaudet is to lose his head, joins his hands and raises his distraught eyes to heaven as he watches his friend pierce his heart. The guard, kneeling at Gaudet's head, makes a gesture of despair, while the confessor reaches out his arms to the suicide victim. The reporter expresses his astonishment.
