Description

Figure 68
Subject. This frightening painting is the most terrible of all those in Le Paysan. Edmond and Gaudet, accused of poisoning, are arrested at their homes. The former wants to help the frightened Mrs Parangon. He is prevented from doing so, flies into a rage, grabs a bayonet, strikes and kills. Mrs Parangon lies unconscious in front of him, surrounded by lifeless corpses. Zéphire follows Edmond, who, feeling restrained, strikes her from behind without seeing her. She is supported by Laure. Gaudet, despite his fury, is horrified by this blow; he urges Edmond to flee, saying: ‘Save yourself! You can still live... I am nearing the end of my career.’
