Mercure de France, October 1763:
Mr Nattier, famous for his art of lending grace to nature without obscuring it, did not need this talent to preserve for us the image of a woman whom death took from him several years ago, and whose loss has caused all those who knew her to regret even more the loss of her spirit than that of her figure. The painting, which contains the portrait of the late Madame Nattier in her prime, that of the artist and his very young children at the time, which appears to have been painted, or at least begun, a long time ago, is the only one by this painter to have been exhibited at the Salon. His age and the infirmities that usually accompany it only too well exempt him from competing with younger rivals. Today, we must take into account his past work and the success it has enjoyed. (c)
