Description
Booklet from the 1763 Salon:
"By Mr. Baudouin, Agréé.
148. A Priest, catechizing young Girls.
Gouasse painting."
Mathon de La Cour, letter III, p. 72:
"On a exposé encore un petit Tableau agouasse [à gouache] du même Auteur, qui représente un Prêtre catéchisant de jeunes filles. We noticed especially one of these girls who receives a letter from the hand of a young man, pretending very-adroitly to chat with one of her companions. This Tableau is however very inferior to that of Phryné, & it is painted in a manner as different,[74] as if they were not by the same hand."
Mercure de France, November 1763:
"The idea of a small gouasse Painting, representing a Catechism of young Girls is again by the same Artist; this production of a very pleasant invention is seconded by much spirit in the execution."
The Archbishop of Paris had this painting withdrawn from the Salon on the second day, for indecency.
