Description
"Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, secretly, however, because he feared the Jews, begged Pilate that he might permit him to take away the body of Jesus and Pilate having permitted him, he came and took the body of Jesus." (John XIX 38.)
1. Signed lower center, below image: "Rembrandt. f. cum pryvl°. 1633 " (fecit cum priviliegio)
2. Fleurdelysé watermark State II (5) the 4th state bears the address of the publisher, the art dealer Hendrick Uylenburch.
The engraving reproduces, with a few changes, the painting of The Deposition from the Cross from Munich.
The motif of the rain of celestial rays piercing the darkness appears here for the first time: it will be repeated in Les Trois arbres and in Les Trois croix (cat. Dutuit no. 94 and 115)
