The fleet of Trojans who fled Troy after its fall calls at the Strophades islands. Starving, the Trojans capture a herd and turn it into a banquet. They are then attacked by Harpies, who sully the food with their excrement. Celeno, the Harpies' ambassador, predicts to Aeneas that the Trojans will only reach their new homeland when hunger forces them to "eat their tables".
