The guilty serpent. (Book IX, 784-785)
Après la consommation du péché originel, le serpent possédé par Satan se retire dans l'ombre du fourré, tandis qu’Ève, voilant sa nudité honteuse, se trouve exposée à la lumière divine. Au fond, Adam, assis et pensif, contemple la scène.
1. Signé en bas de la gravure à gauche « G. Doré », à droite « J. Huyot ».
2. La planche de la Bnf porte en bas l'annotation manuscrite suivante : « 1862. La Bible, planche inédite », qui est au moins partiellement inexacte puisque Doré a publié cette planche dans l'édition illustrée du Paradis perdu, la même année que La Sainte Bible. Voir Milton's Paradise lost. Illustrated by Gustave Doré. Ed., with notes and a life of Milton, by Robert Vaughan [1866].
