L'ouvrage a été attribué à Alexander Bicknell et à Edward Dorrington. Cependant, un exemplaire de l'édition de 1727 conservé à la British Library porte les initiales "P. L." sur le titre ; la dédicace est signée « Peter Longueville » et la préface « P. L. » Dans la dédicace, Longueville affirme être l'auteur du livre et, dans la préface, il dénonce le libraire pour avoir substitué le nom d'Edward Dorrington au sien.
