Religione (Ripa, 1603) - Giuseppe Cesari

Description

History :
  1. Description : « A woman with a thin veil covering her face, holding a book and a cross in her right hand, and a flame of fire in her left, with an elephant beside her, more religious than any other animal, a hieroglyphic symbol of religion. Pliny recounts that it venerates the sun and the stars, and when the new moon appears, it spontaneously goes to wash itself in river water, and when it falls ill, it calls for help from heaven, throwing grasses, such as mint, toward the sky to intercede for the grace of healing. »
