Alexis and his companions return to the Maisonnette (Alexis, t4, 1789) - Berthet after Bornet
Notice précédente Notice n°4 sur 4
Description
It's time for the final explanations in the novel: Alexis returns from a long journey during which he met Carlo Sciocco, who has become his inseparable friend, Dumont, who is his former schoolteacher, Jean Picot, and a mysterious Préville, who is in reality Duverly, the sworn enemy of Candor, Alexis's adoptive father and the owner of the Maisonnette.
Duverly had deceived Candor in his youth and seduced his wife without his knowledge: Clairette, born of this adultery, was raised by Candor as his daughter after his wife's death. At the moment of the final explanations, reconciliations are also in the offing, but as Alexis calls on her adoptive father to lower the Gothic drawbridge of Candor's mansion, Duverly is seized by a malaise that reveals his remorse. He's the one in the foreground, whom Alexis supports, and who has his hat pulled down to hide his identity from the man he deceived decades earlier, while the other characters on the right discuss fatality in philosophy.
