Agnès's mother escapes from her convent (Agnès, t3, Maradan, An VII) - Tardieu the Elder
Notice précédente Notice n°3 sur 4 Notice suivante
Description
In an embedded narrative, Agnes's mother recounts her life, and how her seducer Douglas convinced her to escape from her convent. The image repeats an iconographic motif familiar to readers: the ladder leaning against the wall signifies escape, while the two lovers looking towards the convent indicate threat. However, the text highlights a much more complex escape: Agnès' mother dresses as a man and takes advantage of a meeting between the superior and one of her friends to pass through the convent door alone, directly into the street. The image doesn't go into the details of the text, which it brings back to the topical, immediately identifiable motif of the convent escape.
